Kathleen Beltran
about/ cv
Kathleen paints figurative works in oil and in paper collage. Her style is direct, open, and intimate. She portrays groups of people who we make easy assumptions about - cops, seniors, museum guards, housekeepers.
She began working with torn paper collages, exhibiting at LACMA’s Rental and Sales Gallery. These life-size portraits of influential women range from her mother to Anna Magnani. The era of the 1950’s as the nadir of expectations for women underlies these portraits.
She has had exhibitions at LACMA, LA Art Association, Gallery 825, Topanga Canyon Gallery and was prize winner at the FHP/Take Care competition, judged by Kent Twitchell.
Through Otis College of Art and Design, she was artist-in-residence at The Westchester Community Center. She painted on site, using skills gathered in Laddie John Dill’s Master Workshop where she painted from live models. The paintings from those sessions were given a solo exhibit “Nudes Nudes Nudes” at House of Woo in the Los Angeles Downtown Arts District in 2016.
She received an MFA degree from the Film Theater and Television Program at UCLA and produced and directed several short films. Painting has become her primary art and she lives and works at her studio in Los Angeles.
